Mick Haxell
Senior Aviation Adviser
Mick Haxell is a pilot with an extensive aviation background, both RAAF and civil, spanning 47 years. He has an extensive flying instructional and operational background in numerous fixed and rotary wing aircraft with 10,000 hours flight time experience.
In the RAAF, Mick held various flight commander, command and senior executive level positions in both flying and policy areas. Mick was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for distinguished flying during combat operations in Vietnam, has a Graduate Diploma in Defence and Strategic Studies, is an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Master Air Pilot under the auspices of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.
In the civil aviation field he has been a part time corporate pilot and acting Chief Flying Instructor with both fixed and rotary wing organisations. During a period of nearly 17 years in the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia (CASA), Mick held various managerial and flying operations inspector positions in the standards development and regulatory areas involved with a wide spectrum of air transport and general aviation flying operations. In addition, Mick was a CASA technical advisor to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Operations Panel, the Australian member on the ICAO Helicopter/Tilt Rotor Study Group and the Heliport Design Working Group.
Mick currently undertakes casual flying and instructing on fixed and rotary wing aircraft types, is a CASA Approved Testing Officer and carries out aviation consulting and auditing. In early 2008, he was the civilian member associated with Flight Safety Pty Ltd on the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Rotary Wing Safety Audit Team.
Mick is an active member of the Temora Historic Flight Club (Temora Aviation Museum) where he actively flies the Cessna 0-2 as well as undertaking commentary duties during flying displays.
